Disney previews how the Star Wars Millennium Falcon ride will work

Disneyland and Disney World will get Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge expansion in 2019

Disney’s theme park group has been gradually revealing information about Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge, its big 2019 expansion project. A hyped Christmas preview of the parks mostly repurposed teaser footage from the past couple months, but a brief clip and a direct-to-camera interview began to explain how one of the expansion’s biggest new rides will operate.

The Millennium Falcon Smugglers Run design was teased in November. The ride resembles the iconic (and recently updated) Star Tours, if it were reimagined around video game buzzwords like “interactive” and “immersive.”

Now, we can see that riders choose individual seats in the Millennium Falcon. Each is assigned a different role: pilot, gunner and flight engineer. Similar to Star Tours, the ride itself appears to jostle around, while a first-person, computer-animated journey through space plays on the cockpit window. Unlike Star Tours, riders engage with the adventure by mashing buttons corresponding to their assigned roles.

It’s unclear just how much responsibility each crew member will be given, or how much their decisions will impact the mission. The concept calls to mind iOS multiplayer masterpiece Spaceteam and Ubisoft’s Star Trek: Bridge Crew.

Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge opens in summer 2019 at Disneyland and fall 2019 at Disney World.
