Hellshots Golf combines the best of Doom, golf

As if either have socially redeeming qualities

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

Like golf? OK. Like Doom? Great! Modder TerminusEst13 has just the concoction for you: Hellshots Golf. Take a gander at it above.

While I do not play golf (in real life anyway), as a 45-year-old white man living in the rural South, I consider myself the Polygon writer most qualified on the subject. And in my professional opinion, Hellshots Golf is a perfect representation of what golf would be like on Mars with Pain Elementals impolitely playing through your round.

In Hellshots Golf the player gets three clubs: heavy (a driver?), medium (looks like he’s going with the 7-iron, Verne) and light (putter). Playing from the championship tees on the notoriously difficult No. 666 (which dog-legs right to an elevated green that has one hell of a false front) players will consider themselves lucky to eight-putt for a par 20.

“This really should not have taken half a year to put out,” says the course designer. Hey, it took Henry Fownes a year and two dozen mules to build Oakmont, so don’t sell yourself short, my dude. Hellshots Golf works on the ZDoom/GZDoom/Zanondrum mod platforms and is available now.
