Smash Bros. dominates Nintendo eShop this week, but don’t forget this other classic

Katamari Damacy rolls in quietly too

To most people, Dec. 7, 2018, means one thing: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

These people are not wrong. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is excellent, and it’s easily the most buzzworthy first-party Nintendo game of the month, if not the year.

But these people would be sorely remiss to throw all their eggs into the Smash Bros. basket, because Bandai Namco slips in a gem of its own onto Nintendo Switch eShop that very same day. Katamari Damacy Reroll is a port of the venerable PlayStation 2 game, one of the most original of its era — a game whose quirkiness has been hardly matched since.

While there are some differences between the PS2 version and the Switch version that may be off-putting to original Katamari fans, we feel it’s wrong to complain. Another place to play Katamari, even if it’s nothing new, is never a bad thing. The Switch’s portability means we can even roll on the go, a rarity for the franchise. (Previous handheld iterations do not deserve further mention here.)

This HD upgrade of the classic puzzle-action game — where the tiny Prince of Cosmos must collect junk to recreate the stars his father destroyed — may not be perfect, and it won’t generate the same fervor as a new Super Smash Bros. That’s understandable. But Katamari Damacy feels just as special as the once-a-generation Smash Bros. games do. Let’s not forget it in all the hustle.

The full list of games coming to the Nintendo Switch eShop through Dec. 12 is below.
