Avengers: Endgame trailer reveals the fate of Shuri

For the most part, we knew who didn’t survive

The first trailer for Avengers: Endgame bleakly showed us the survivors of Thanos’ snap and the stark reality they now face.

For the most part, we knew which of the Marvel Cinematic Universe characters survived the events of Infinity War and which ones didn’t. Surviving? A guilt-ridden Tony Stark and a haunted Steve Rogers, among others. Among the dead? Young Peter Parker (still crying), the Winter Soldier Bucky Barnes and King of Wakanda T’Challa.

But there were a few stragglers whose fates we did not know. The Avengers: Endgame trailer gave us some answers on Hawkeye’s front at least, but also revealed that a fan-favorite character that everyone assumed was alive may have been caught up in the Decimation.

In the trailer, Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) looks through some images of the heroes we can presume are missing. Even though Scott Lang appears at the end of this trailer, last time we saw him in Ant-Man and the Wasp, he was trapped in the quantum realm. Though the grounded Avengers didn’t witness Peter Parker’s tragic end, his continued disappearance can only mean he too was caught up in the snap.

And then there’s Shuri.

She actually appears on the screen before Peter, but it’s a very blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment. But there she is, with the words “Missing” underneath her portrait. Did Shuri get snapped?!

Previously, Angela Bassett, who plays Queen Ramonda, had said that both her character and Letitia Wright’s Shuri had survived the snap. The Russo brothers, however, were tight-lipped on whether or not Shuri survived.

We never actually saw Shuri get snapped on screen — but then again, we didn’t see her survive either. There’s a possibility that she didn’t get snapped and is missing for a separate reason, but why?

What we do know is that without the smartest character in the MCU, this whole Endgame is going to be a lot harder to fix.

Avengers: Endgame comes out on April 26, 2019.
