The King of Fighters 2002 is available as a free download on GOG.com right now, making for a decent way to get into the classic, three-on-three fighting series. The limited-time giveaway is only good until 9 a.m. ET on Feb. 15, which gives you just under 48 hours to grab this early Valentine’s Day gift.
SNK has released the 2002 edition of its marquee franchise on numerous platforms since its arcade debut; naturally, GOG is giving out the PC version. The Windows- and Mac-compatible edition of the game is the only one to have received a worldwide release, first hitting Steam in 2015.
A port of the Japan-only Xbox Live Arcade version, The King of Fighters 2002 is not without gameplay issues on PC. Reviews on the PC storefront explain that the game has locked controls, meaning there’s no native way to remap key bindings. That can be a major pain point for hardcore fighting game fans.
Steam users are much kinder to the game and its upgraded version, however, regarding it as a classic. At any rate, it’s a good way to get pumped for the next fighting game from SNK: the very ... suggestive SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy.
