Rare is going overboard with performance recommendations for its upcoming nautical adventure, Sea of Thieves, including a promise that the Windows PC version of the game is designed to run even on underpowered rigs. You can also take the visual fidelity as high as you’d like, as evidenced by the spec sheet for the game provided by the studio.
But getting a game that looks this good to run on weaker systems had to have taken a lot of work.
“Our rendering team set themselves the goal early on of ‘how low can we go,’ sometimes also referred to fondly as ‘getting the game running on a potato,’ which is why we want to deliver a great version of the game even for those with computers below our official minimum spec,” wrote Ted Timmins, PC design lead at Rare, on the Sea of Thieves website. “The game is perfectly playable at 540p, and one of the advantages of Xbox Play Anywhere is that if you own an Xbox One AND a low-spec laptop you can still take full advantage of it, and we absolutely encourage it!”
You can take a look at the various visual options for the game below, along with the hardware you would need to run the game at that level. Click on the image for a version at full resolution:

This is a pretty detailed breakdown of how Sea of Thieves will look on a variety of systems, and it’s good to know that the game will scale well enough that just about any system will get a good experience. We’re looking forward to testing the full range of graphical options when Sea of Thieves launches on PC and Xbox One on March 20. In the meantime, check out our Arrful Squad video from the game’s beta last month.
