Spot Hello Kitty, Mario Kart and Halo in the new Ready Player One trailer

All about OASIS, and the forces that threaten it

Warner Bros. has released a brand-new trailer for Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, with more pop culture references than you can shake a stick at.

The film is based on the novel of the same name by Ernest Cline. The book takes place in a near-future dystopia, where society is obsessed with the now-decades-old pop culture of the 1980s in part because of a famous scavenger hunt coded into the deep places of “Oasis” — a fully immersive virtual reality online space — by its eccentric billionaire inventor. Oasis is populated by a generation of super-millennials: kids who literally dropped out, tuned in and digitized new virtual selves when human economic development failed to give them room.

Our main character, Wade Owen Watts — or Parzival, in the Oasis — and his cohorts are dedicated “gunters,” searching for the clues and hints to a massive fortune and control of the corporation that runs Oasis. Watts is played by Tye Sheridan in the film.

Ready Player One will hit theaters on March 30.
