Sonic the Hedgehog and Pac-Man are crossing over to each other’s mobile games for the next month. Until March 20, Sonic can be found in Bandai Namco’s Pac-Man game for iOS and Android, and Pac-Man and his spouse will be playable characters in the endless runner Sonic Dash.
The crossover celebrates the fifth anniversary of Sonic Dash’s launch. In Sonic Dash, Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man will be part of special character events that alternate for one week. If players chomp up enough of the special fruit, bells and keys with them, they can keep the characters.
In Pac-Man, Sonic will play in a maze styled as Green Hill Zone, collecting rings (instead of dots) and taking down Moto Bugs (as opposed to ghosts). Anyone playing the level between now and March 20 gets to keep the special Sonic Maze.
A news release from Sega and Bandai Namco tried to explain the mash-up as a kind of mutual aid scenario. Dr. Eggman is, naturally, behind the disruption, kidnapping Sonic’s pals and taking them into Pac-Man’s game. Then Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man run over to help out in Sonic’s game. Canonically speaking, this all seems very thin; but it’s free, additional content for those who check in to play it.
