Fortnite, the hybrid action building game from Epic Games, will soon enter Season 3. Along with a new Battle Pass and tons of new cosmetic items, there’s at least one new feature coming down the pike. It’s called “turbo building.”
Epic announced turbo building in a blog post today. It’s secreted away in the menu settings, but once you turn it on you’ll be able to create structures more quickly. It reduces the need to enter the building menu as often, and allows you to use the primary fire button to continuously place the last piece that you selected. Epic said that players will now be able to “paint” those pieces in more quickly, which should be particularly handy when you’re trying to throw up a hasty defense or build a stairway to heaven.
The feature will also include the ability to toggle on “Auto Change Materials,” which will keep placing the same type of piece into the world with whatever materials you’ve got left in your inventory.
To support rapid building, Epic said that it’s also changing where and how players will be able to build.
“Sometimes it’s frustrating when your placement is blocked unexpectedly and you aren’t sure why,” it said. “Currently, smaller objects like furniture and shrubs are destroyed when you build over them, but trees, rocks and vehicles can still get in the way. We’ve changed the building system to allow you to place structures right through large objects, meaning you can now build pretty much anywhere at anytime!”
Finally, Epic said that it has enhanced the network code the supports building in the Battle Royale mode. Previously, when you changed between building pieces that request would be routed through Epic’s own servers. In Season 3 that will happen on the client side. The plan is to eventually make that change for Save the World gameplay as well.
There’s no release date for Season 3 at the moment, but if Epic follows its patterns of late it should be up around Thursday of next week.
