GameStops’ Pro Day Sale, gaming PC discounts, VR deals and more

A new console or game is a great way to spend some of that tax return cash

We’re speeding headlong into tax season and, while most folks haven’t even begun to think about their W-2s, early birds are in for a treat. Retailers are marking down games for buyers with freshly replenished pockets. Overall, it’s a pretty good time of year to buy, but Feb. 24 is specifically one of the best days of the year for gaming sales. Games, consoles and collectibles are being marked down at GameStop on Feb. 24 for its Pro Day Sale. The discounts are only available for Pro members, but membership is only $14.99 per year and if you sign up, the fee will pay for itself after you buy just one game.

If you’re looking for something to play some of your new games on, HP is offering discounts on its Omen-brand gaming laptops. With the shortage of graphics cards making it more difficult to assemble a gaming rig, it’s as good a time as any to buy one that’s already set up for you. This sale also ends on Feb. 24, so you have to take advantage of this deal quickly.

COMMERCE TEAM PICKS

  • Xbox Gold’s free games program is a pretty solid deal on a regular month, but the games announced for the month of March are off the charts. Trials of the Blood Dragon and Quantum Conundrum are fun, but Superhot is the real gem in the group. It’s one of the most innovative shooters to come out in years - a definite must play.
  • GameStop’s Pro Day Sale is chock full of great deals this year. You have to be a Pro member, but that only costs $14.99 per year. Games like Call of Duty: WWII and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus are being marked down by more than $20 each, so the membership really pays for itself. Pro Day only lasts through Feb. 24, so you have to act fast.
  • So, The Defenders show on Netflix was just alright. It’s pretty uneven, but its highs are high enough to warrant the full watch through. If you’re like me and enjoyed the season and want to dig into some of the characters a little further on the page, Comixology has a sale running on volumes featuring Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Daredevil. The banner says the deal was up on Feb. 22, but nearly all of the volumes are still on sale.
