Metal Gear Survive is the rare Metal Gear game developed without the involvement of series creator Hideo Kojima, and the first entry in the series since the breakup of Kojima Productions. But the people working on Survive haven’t forgotten about their Koji Pro brethren, many of whom have moved on to the new Kojima Productions working on Death Stranding.
In the opening cutscene of Metal Gear Survive, there’s a well-hidden reference to the old Kojima Productions, along with a couple of other references.
Twitter user Michael Yurko spotted the Easter egg shortly after the game was released.
Looking at the last names (or code names) on the muster roll on the left, the list spells out “KJP FOREVER” or “Kojima Productions forever.” The player’s chosen name breaks up those two phrases, with Bastard Yota and Cunning Yuji — likely references to Metal Gear Survive director Yota Tsutsumizaki and producer Yuji Korekado — rounding out the list.
The various names are listed as killed in action, missing in action or, in the case of Yuji and Yota, absent without leave.
It’s probably worth noting that the first name on the list, Vengeful Mosquito, looks like a reference to Mosquito, a key figure in the events of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes. And the next two names on the list have codenames that start with MG, a possible reference to the Metal Gear series. Marlin and Gibbon — “MG” — are listed as KIA.
It’s not clear who’s responsible for the hidden reference or if this is some sort of a miraculous coincidence, but we’re inclined to believe this is the Metal Gear Survive staff’s way of recognizing former co-workers in an under-the-radar way. The game’s credits don’t mention Hideo Kojima or Kojima Productions by name, only giving a “special thanks” to “Metal Gear Solid V all staff.”
