Thanks to last night’s Super Bowl spot for Avengers: Infinity War, we now have two trailers for the epic team up movie — and that’s enough to start drawing parallels. Namely: What’s up with Captain America’s shield?
Both trailers have taken time to highlight the good Captain’s reliance on a defensive object as his primary weapon — and that he’s not working with his usual kit in Infinity War. Last year’s first trailer gave Black Panther a big impressive line about it, as Wakanda prepared for an (apparent) alien invasion.
“Evacuate the city,” T’challa orders, “Engage all defenses. And get this man a shield.”
Wait, what happened to Cap’s shield?
You could be forgiven for forgetting about this, as it’s a small moment in an emotionally heavy scene at the end of a long movie from two years ago, but Cap left his shield behind in Captain America: Civil War. After coming close to peeling Tony Stark out of his Iron Man armor with it, Cap attempts to limp away with Bucky.
Though defeated, Tony calls after him, objecting what he sees as an insult after injury: That a man who would support and protect the assassin who killed Tony’s parents would carry one of his father’s inventions. (Howard Stark made the shield during World War II from the only sample of the ultra rare metal vibranium that the United States had available.) As if to agree — or perhaps for other reasons — Steve drops the shield, leaving it behind as he and Bucky escape to Wakanda.
Where is Cap’s classic WWII-era shield now? It hasn’t been confirmed — but the likeliest explanation is that Tony has it, either in Avengers tower or, potentially, in the Avengers’ upstate New York compound.
The latest Avengers: Infinity War trailer shows off what Cap is using instead — a transformable shield of a Wakandan variety (seen above), likely also made from vibranium, which is easily obtained in Wakanda. Quick slow-mo shots from both trailers actually show that he has two of them:

And given that both trailers for Infinity War have taken time to point out that Cap isn’t using his regular shield — you can expect that when it does resurface, it’ll be a big moment.
