Ready Player One is just a couple of weeks away, and that means it’s time for a new trailer.
Embedded above, this one focuses heavily on main character Wade Watts’ relationship with Art3mis, his crush in the game. There are far fewer references to benign nostalgic properties of decades past, although those appear from time to time, too. King Kong, the Iron Giant, dinosaurs and even a-ha’s classic 1985 single “Take On Me” all make an appearance.
This is the first trailer we’ve received since Ready Player One’s world premiere at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, this past weekend. Early reactions to the film were mostly positive, although some later reviews have called the film out for its reliance on throwbacks to classic film, TV, comic and gaming properties. As Evan Narcisse wrote at io9:
Ready Player One doesn’t show any insight as to why we like comics, video games, TV shows, or movies. It just takes as a given that we do, an assumption that makes the movie feel hollow.
Ready Player One will be released on March 29.
