Danganronpa creators’ next game, Zanki Zero, coming to the West

Zanki Zero: Last Beginning bound for PS4 and Steam

A new game from the creators behind the cult-hit Danganronpa series is coming to North America and Europe. Zanki Zero: Last Beginning will be released on PlayStation 4 and Windows PC via Steam, publisher Spike Chunsoft announced at GDC today.

The game does not have a release date.

Like the Danganronpa series, death will play a critical role in Zanki Zero’s gameplay and story. Players will explore ruins and dungeons in a post-apocalyptic world as one of eight protagonists “as they fight for survival and search for meaning in their never-ending cycles of life and death,” Spike Chunsoft said.

That cycle of life and death will take place over just 13 days for each of the game’s protagonists, which grow old and see their abilities change as they age. “Depending on how you die, you can even earn bonus upgrades for your next life cycle. Take advantage of each life cycle to the fullest,” Spike Chunsoft said.

Players will have to hunt for food and materials, and battle monsters in first-person dungeon crawling exploration. The game’s survival mechanics require players to sleep, eat and even go to the bathroom.
