Get Out is beating the odds at the Oscars

A horror movie could take Best Picture

Horror movies rarely get recognized at the Academy Awards. So the fact that Get Out is up for four of the “Big Five” awards (Best Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Picture, but not Best Actress) is pretty noteworthy.

Only two horror movies have taken home the Best Picture award in the history of the Oscars: The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and Rebecca (1940). And only a handful more horror movies have even been nominated.

But the film isn’t the only one beating the odds. Director Jordan Peele is, too. The first-time filmmaker is only the fifth black man ever to be nominated for Best Director.
