A ‘fan’ turned EA’s PR blunder into a brilliant Battlefront 2 mod

Get ready for some pride ... and accomplishment

Star Wars Battlefront 2 suffered from one of the worst-received economies in AAA gaming, and EA’s attempt to spin the unlock values of the game’s heroes on Reddit backfired in spectacular fashion; the post became the most downvoted comment in Reddit history.

“The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes,” the EA Community Team account stated in a three-month-old post that has more than 670,000 downvotes to date. “As for cost, we selected initial values based upon data from the Open Beta and other adjustments made to milestone rewards before launch. Among other things, we’re looking at average per-player credit earn rates on a daily basis, and we’ll be making constant adjustments to ensure that players have challenges that are compelling, rewarding, and of course attainable via gameplay.”

Several months after launch, a “fan” has immortalized EA’s explanation in a mod for the PC version of the game, as seen by PC Gamer, turning the game’s loot crates into “pride and accomplishment” crates. You can see the texture below.

“The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes,” the mod’s description states. See, it’s a comment that works in many different contexts!

This is a somewhat low blow, but it’s also a nice visual way to mark a bit of Reddit history. Enjoy the mod, and go forth to find your own sense of pride and accomplishment in everything you do.
