Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s climactic duel between John Boyega’s Finn and Gwendoline Christie’s Captain Phasma was at one time completely different than what we saw on screen, according to a deleted scene debuted on LucasFilm’s The Star Wars Show today. You can check it out above.
Once you get past the utterly Star-Wars-ian line “You squealed like a whoop hog,” what’s happening here is a nice beat for Finn — the defected, traitor stormtrooper — and his former superior officer, Captain Phasma — the storm trooper so good at her job that she gets to wear a chrome suit and be referred to only by her nickname.
When Phasma accuses him of betraying the First Order, he fights back with the truth: That when it came down to it, she chose her own life over the goals of the fascistic military force and allowed the Resistance to destroy the First Order’s greatest weapon. Now it’s Finn who has a cause worth giving his all for, and Phasma is forced to be the traitor, as she murders the four trooper witnesses to preserve her secret — just as she committed terrible acts to preserve it in her comic book miniseries.
It’s a notably different end for Phasma than we saw in the final film, and one that will likely appeal to a lot of fans.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be available to download on March 13, and on physical formats two weeks later on March 27.
