In a new Developer Update video, Blizzard announced Overwatch Archives, the new name of the game’s recurring springtime event that delves into Overwatch’s history. We got some teases on this year’s Archive event via a handy update from game director Jeff Kaplan and lead engineer Tim Ford, with more info to come. All we know now is the name of an upcoming Overwatch Archive: Retribution.
Uprising was Overwatch’s historical event last year, and brought a new gameplay element to the game. Uprising was Overwatch’s first real PvE game type, after the defend the gate mission for Junkenstein around Halloween. Uprising told the story of Tracer’s first mission against Null Sector, a rogue group of Omnics set on the destruction of the Omnic/human peace talks. The Uprising mission will be available to play during this year’s event, for anyone who missed it the first time around.
It’s not clear yet what Retribution will bring to the game. The teaser earlier this week suggests that this year’s mission will be centered around Blackwatch, taking place one year prior to the events of Uprising.
Blizzard plans to unveil more details about Retribution during stage three of the Overwatch League on Wednesday, April 4, which starts at 4 p.m. PST.
