Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and actor Peter Dinklage, are teaming up with Rick and Morty’s co-creators to provide a special commentary track.
Benioff, Weiss and Dinklage will offer their takes on one of Rick and Morty season three’s most popular episodes, “Pickle Rick.” The episode was beloved by critics and most fans, who praised the episode for combining an unbelievably wacky premise (Rick turning into a pickle) with an important, subdued conversation about dysfunctional families, seen through a family counseling session.
Benioff dubbed the monologue Rick gives to a therapist in the episode as perhaps “the best writing in 2017,” according to an Entertainment Weekly preview of the commentary track. Benioff and Weiss have been outspoken about their adoration of the series before; they told Deadline in 2016, following the show’s second season, that Rick and Morty was one of the smartest shows on television.
“Rick and Morty is one of the funniest, smartest things ever put on TV,” they said. “Every one of its 22-minute plots is more ambitious than 99% of the science fiction films that will be made in the next ten years.”
The commentary track will be available on Rick and Morty’s season three Blu-ray, which will be released on May 15. (Just don’t expect any teases for Game of Thrones’ eighth season.)
