SNK Anniversary Collection coming to Nintendo Switch

With no Switch Virtual Console in sight, retro compilations are the next best thing

SNK is bringing a selection of its classic arcade and console games to Nintendo Switch this fall as the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection. The compilation focuses on the company’s games released during the 1980s — the pre-Neo Geo era.

The SNK 40th Anniversary Collection will include at least 13 titles, some of which have both arcade and console versions. In publisher NIS America’s announcement, the company said more titles are to come, but here’s what’s confirmed so far:

  • Alpha Mission (console/arcade)
  •
Athena (console/arcade)
  •
Crystalis (console)
  •
Ikari Warriors (console/arcade)
  •
Ikari Warriors 2: Victory Road (console/arcade)
  • Ikari Warriors 3: The Rescue (console/arcade)
  • Guerrilla War (console/arcade)
  • P.O.W. (console/arcade)
  • Prehistoric Isle in 1930 (arcade)
  • Psycho Soldier (arcade)
  • Street Smart (arcade)
  • TNK III (console/arcade)
  • Vanguard (arcade)

The SNK 40th Anniversary Collection will include a few modern conveniences, like the option to “rewind and save at any time” and “redesigned control schemes for a modern feel.” The compilation will also include an “SNK Museum” that promises a look at the history of the developer through high-definition artwork and promotional materials.

SNK fans are well aware that several of the company’s Neo Geo games, including entries in the Art of Fighting, World Heroes, Samurai Shodown and Metal Slug series, are already available for Switch. They’re released under developer Hamster’s Arcade Archives (ACA) line of classic titles.

While a collection of classic SNK games is great news, the stand-alone collection appears to be another sign that Nintendo’s Virtual Console for Switch isn’t happening any time soon.
