Watch a magical trailer for Netflix’s very first ... comic book?

Mark Millar and Olivier Coipel’s The Magic Order hits shelves in June

This first trailer for Netflix’s The Magic Order is deceptive. Despite the look of it, which mixes animation and sound effects along with images, The Magic Order is not something you’ll find on Netflix’s app.

It’s a comic written by Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, Wolverine: Old Man Logan, Ultimate X-Men) and drawn by Olivier Coipel (X-Men, Avengers, Thor). It’ll be out on the shelves of your local shop, or available on a comics reading app. So how did Netflix get into the business of making comics?

Well, it goes back to August 2017, when the streaming giant acquired Millar’s comics publishing company, Millarworld. Through Millarworld, Millar has published Kick-Ass, Wanted and Kingsman, all original comics series distributed by other larger publishers and adapted for feature films. In February 2018, Netflix and Millarworld announced that The Magic Order would be the companies’ first collaboration.

“Magic meets the mob,” is how Netflix’s announcement described the six-issue comic book miniseries. “Five families of magicians sworn to protect our world for generations must battle an enemy who’s picking them off one by one. By day they live among us as our neighbors, friends and co-workers, but by night they are the sorcerers, magicians and wizards that protect us from the forces of darkness.”

The Magic Order will be published through Image Comics, with the first issue hitting shelves on June 13.
