Destiny 2’s fall expansion to have a completely new mode

Destiny 2’s version of the Taken King will be revealed at E3 2018

Bungie/Activision

Destiny 2: Warmind is out this Tuesday, May 8, but players are already looking ahead to the game’s next expansion. Launching in September alongside Season 4, Destiny 2’s fall expansion promises to deliver massive changes to the game. According to Activision Blizzard’s first-quarter financial earnings call this week as well as several Destiny YouTubers, this fall’s expansion will also bring an new mode that’s unlike anything we’ve seen in Destiny.

In Seeking Alpha’s transcription of the earnings call Thursday, Collister Johnson, Activision president and chief operating officer, had this to say about the fall expansion:

But even more of what’s coming this fall into the innovations and gameplay there, including to what we think will be an incredibly engaging new mode, one that introduces a whole new style of play for first-person shooter gaming generally and certainly for the shooter space that Destiny created.

This quote suggests that Destiny 2 is not getting a Battle Royale mode (as some would expect), but that this feature will be something completely different.

Destiny YouTubers Datto and UnknownPlayer recently went to the Bungie community summit, an event where influencers got the chance to play some of the fall expansion’s content and give feedback to the developers. While both YouTubers signed heavy NDAs, they were able to talk a bit about this new feature coming in the next expansion.

Similar to Activison Blizzard on the earnings call, both Datto and UnknownPlayer suggest that this mode is brand new to the Destiny franchise. While their experience with it was limited, each one expressed excitement about the prospect of a new, repeatable activity for the Destiny 2 endgame, which should give hope to disappointed Destiny fans worn out after the main campaign.

Activision Blizzard also confirmed that it will full reveal Destiny 2’s fall expansion at E3 this year, most likely during the Sony’s press conference. Expect to get the full details about whatever this new mode is during that event, which kicks off in June.
