We’re only a couple of months away from getting revenge for Cayde-6’s unfortunate demise in Destiny 2: Forsaken. We knew that the campaign would boast a revenge-filled, western-style hunt, but thanks to an interview that Bungie did with Gamesradar, we have an even better idea of what that means.
Like we saw in the cinematic trailer from E3, the villains of Forsaken include Prince Uldren and eight Barons of the Scorn. The Scorn are apparently zombified Fallen, having been killed and raised from the grave time and time again. Their leaders are no exceptions. It looks like the story will consist of us hunting down these Barons in a non-linear fashion.
At a certain point in the story — Bungie’s Steve Cotton and Scott Taylor weren’t being too specific — we’ll have a list of names to cross off. Players and their Fireteams will get the chance to choose their targets from a list of eight Barons. These villains will have their own power levels associated with them, but players can take them on in any order they wish
The finale will involve us tracking down Prince Uldren, the man who shot Cayde-6. Hopefully, players will get a chance to interrogate the Awoken royalty and ask him why he would do such a thing to our quip-filled Vanguard.
Like all things in Destiny, players will find an optimized route through the story — something Cotton and Taylor are acutely aware of in the interview. But ideally, players will be able to run things in an order that they find interesting or fun — just like Mega Man’s robot masters. It should also help regulate difficulty for players, letting them challenge themselves with tough fights first or take on the Barons in intended order for a simpler challenge.
We don’t know much about the Barons aside from the ViDoc announcing Forsaken earlier this month. One of them is said to be an incredible sniper, who we’ll end up having a one-on-one (or one-on-three) sniper duel with. Another is a melee-focused Baron with a massive, flaming flail.
Unlike Mega Man, however, we won’t be stealing the Baron’s powers to use against their allies — as far as we know.
We’ll learn more about these enemies — and why we should kill them — as we inch closer to Destiny 2: Forsaken’s launch for PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One on Sept. 4.
