Summer Games Done Quick 2018: what to watch on the sixth day

Fan-favorite halfcoordinated returns, and SGDQ is rockin’ the TASbot tonight

Games Done Quick
Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

Summer Games Done Quick 2018 heads into its weekend finale with 22 events over the next 24 hours (noon today until noon Saturday). Highlights include Super Mario 64 — the most-run game on speedrun.com — in primetime, blocks of Star Wars and Kirby, and TASbot running two games at midnight. You can watch it all live, right here.

TASbot, of course, is the Tool-Assisted Speedrun bot, which is programmed to play an ideal (i.e. not humanly possible) run through a game. At 11:48 p.m. TASBot takes on F-Zero GX and then Super Metroid (a zero% run) at 12:08 a.m.

Also of note, halfcoordinated, (real name, Clint Alexa), a staple of Games Done Quick events, is running Hob at 1:57 p.m. halfcoordinated has limited use of his right hand, which requires him to run his events effectively one-handed. He still competes in general categories (some games, for example Super Mario Bros. do feature one-handed categories and records).

Halfcoordinated is one of eight No. 1 world record holders slated to appear over the next 24 hours. Here they are:

  • At 12:07 p.m., Kuumba in Rockman No-Costancy (Any% normal).
  • At 12:57 p.m., almondcity in Mega Man 7 (Any%).
  • At 1:57 p.m., orsa (No. 1) and cleartonic (No. 2) in Mega Man 8 (Any%, race).
  • At 4:12 p.m., swordsmankirby and Bbforky in Goof Troop (co-op). These two hold the No. 1 record in this event.
  • At 5:32 a.m. (Saturday, June 30), halfcoordinated in Hob (Any%, no clip, one-handed).
  • At 6:37 a.m., Nerd_Squared in I Am Bread (Bagel race).
  • At 8 a.m., Alex Dest in Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage (14 talisman).
  • At 8:42 a.m., CameronVengenz in Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy (Crash Bandicoot 1, Any%).
  • At 10:19 a.m., Swordsmankirby in Kirby’s Adventure (Any% no major glitches).

Other runs of note:

  • ysalamiri is No. 2 in speedruns for both Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 and Star Wars Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith. ysalamiri takes on both back-to-back beginning at 3:22 a.m.
  • cheese05 is No. 2 in Super Mario 64 (70 stars), and races Puncayshun in that event at 8:26 p.m. tonight.
  • Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 has no runs listed on speedrun.com. PJ takes a shot at it at 3:02 p.m. today.

As always, Summer Games Done Quick is a round-the-clock affair, so you may have missed something overnight. For that, we recommend checking out the continually updated VOD thread at r/speedrun and the official Games Done Quick channel at YouTube.
