Bumblebee’s first trailer definitely makes it look like a Transformers movie

He’s still a robot in disguise

The first trailer for Paramount’s Bumblebee, a spinoff based on the cutest Transformers star, certainly seems like a regular ol’ Transformers movie.

There’s no sign of Optimus Prime or Megatron, but all the traditional elements from Paramount’s Transformers cinematic franchise are present. A scared Bumblebee is being hunted by the American government, and his only hope for refuge comes in the form of a Californian girl named Charlie. Together the two are sure to bond and save each other from some looming disaster, proving once and for all that machines and humans can be friends.

Bumblebee takes place in 1987, about 20 years before the events of the first Transformers movie. The full synopsis can be read below.

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

Bumblebee will be released this year.
