Two years after the anime series ended, Yuri on Ice is finally getting a movie. The first visual teaser for the 2019 movie has been revealed — and it promises a glimpse into the backstory of a beloved character.
The forty seconds of plaintive music pans onto a frozen landscape with a figure that is most likely Viktor Nikiforov and his dog Makkachin, before cutting to the title card: Ice Adolescence
Yuri on Ice: Ice Adolescence appears to focus on Viktor’s teenage years. While the anime peeks into Yuri K’s backstory, we know relatively little about Viktor, and never even meet his family.
Yuri on Ice ran from October 2016 to December 2016 and followed the relationships between Japanese figure skater Yuri Katsuki, his coach and idol Viktor Nikiforov, and young Russian skater Yuri Plisetsky, as the two skaters compete in the Figure Skating Grand Prix. The series was notable for including a relationship between Yuri K. and Viktor that did not fall into common sexualized tropes found in yaoi. Yuri K. and Viktor’s relationship was especially praised for depicting a sincere and prominent same-sex couple in a country and sport that regularly deal with homophobia.
Judging by the enthusiastic replies on the official Twitter announcement, fans are eager to be reunited with the Yuri on Ice characters. Considering the show was so popular it basically crashed Crunchyroll, this comes at no surprise.
Based on information released on the official site, there is no formal release date for Yuri on Ice: Ice Adolescence.
