Dragon Ball FighterZ already includes two different playable versions of Goku and Vegeta in the roster, but neither of them are the classic, basic versions of the characters. The game’s premium downloadable content pass is going to fix that next month, with the release of both Base Goku and Base Vegeta — and their debut trailers show designs faithful to the anime’s early days.
You’ll notice in the trailer for Base Vegeta that he has something brown wrapped around his stomach; it’s his tail, which all Saiyans are born with and can use to transform into a giant ape-looking creature. Goku and Gohan had that ability too as kids, but the characters available in FighterZ stem from after their tails have been chopped off. It’s kind of nice to see that tail still on Vegeta, especially since his is cut off too later in the series. Will there be a moon he can stare at so that he can become his inner monkey monster? Unclear, but fingers crossed.
Meanwhile, Base Goku retains the lighthearted spirit of the character that slowly dwindled as Dragon Ball Z continued on. But just as he was throughout his childhood, as seen in the earlier Dragon Ball stories, adult Goku manages a carefree nature amid all that violence. At least until he dies approximately a million more times.
Both of these guys are primarily in FighterZ for fighting, of course, so it’s doubtful that we’ll see much of these backstories mentioned. For longtime fans, however, Goku and Vegeta’s belated arrivals will mark a true throwback to Dragon Ball Z’s quainter, earlier days.
The Dragon Ball FighterZ DLC pass, which will offer access to the characters, is on sale for $34.99 and includes six new characters in addition to our boys, like favorite villains Broly and Bardock.
