Danny Rand is a more familiar face in Iron Fist’s second season

The mask is a message

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

Iron Fist’s second season begins on Netflix on Sept. 7. Folks didn’t dig the first season so much, so this trailer promoting Danny Rand’s return makes sure to give some fan-service nods to the character’s history and let folks know the writers were listening.

That includes Rand (Finn Jones) donning the original yellow mask of Iron Fist, dating to the character’s first appearance in the karate and kung fu fabulous 1970s. One of the first season’s shortcomings was that Iron Fist — not a minor character in the Marvel Universe but not a headliner like Captain America or Thor — did not appear in anything looking like his old costume. Daredevil and Luke Cage were a little more recognizable in their garb, continuing into The Defenders when everyone teamed up (including Jessica Jones).

So the throwdown around the 20-second mark, referenced by Colleen Wing (played by Jessica Henwick) does as much to reference Iron Fist’s time duking it out in K’un Lun — which has left some emotional scars for season two — as it is to say to fans that they’re getting a more recognizable Iron Fist this time.

Iron Fist was confirmed for a second season last week at San Diego Comic-Con 2018. In the season synopsis given, Rand is feeling the responsibility of protecting New York in the absence of Matt Murdock/Daredevil. “But a sinister plot twist threatens his very identity,” it adds, “and he must conquer his villains to protect the town and people he holds close to his heart.”
