Digimon’s 20th anniversary kicks off with new ‘survival sim RPG’ in 2019

Digimon Survive takes us to a ‘strangely nostalgic place’

Twenty years after their debut, Digimon are still the champions, and they’re certainly ones worth celebrating. Today, Bandai Namco announced that a new Digimon role-playing game will be released in celebration of the Digimon anime’s 20th anniversary. Digimon Survive, a new survival simulation RPG, will be available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One in 2019.

Players navigate the new world as Takuma, a teenage boy who becomes stranded after venturing into the wild. Accompanied by Agumon, a reptile Digimon, he attempts to break free of the alternate dimension. However, the stakes are high — the new world is not free of death and destruction, and players must fight simply to keep themselves and other characters alive.

More recent Digimon games such as Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (available on PlayStation 4/Vita) were more traditional turn-based RPGs. Digimon Survive, on the other hand, is reminiscent of other strategy-based RPGs like Fire Emblem and is unique even amongst other Digimon RPGs like Cyber Sleuth or its sequel, Hacker’s Memory.

While the trailer states that in-game characters were the ones lost in a “strangely nostalgic place,” it’s certain that the the game itself will arouse nostalgia in longtime Digimon fans as they celebrate the series’ 20th anniversary.
