Spider-Man swings into action on PlayStation 4 in less than a month, and anticipation is high for the beloved hero’s latest game.
Spider-Man is one of the most famous superheroes, and even prior to the Marvel Cinematic Universe taking over the box office, he had plenty of non-comic-reading fans, bolstered by his many movie and television show appearances.
Before Tom Holland wore the Spidey suit, Andrew Garfield held the title in two Amazing Spider-Man movies, and Tobey Maguire was the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in the Sam Raimi-directed films. There were also various animated series and a couple of live-action ones.
To pay tribute to some of these previous iconic Spider-Man moments and in anticipation of the upcoming game, fans have remixed the PS4 Spider-Man’s trailer with audio and clips of the web-slinger’s previous appearances.
This one below uses the opening theme from the 1990s Spider-Man animated television show, which aired on Fox alongside X-Men: The Animated Series:
The 1960s animated series has re-entered popular culture in recent years due to the memes it has spawned, so naturally, swapping the sleek PS4 footage for the 1967 animation prompts a few laughs.
Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man movies boast an action-packed score from Danny Elfman, and it fits all-too-well with the action-packed footage.
A dubstep remix of the Spider-Man theme song already exists, so why not use that?
This one goes back to Spider-Man’s gaming roots by using the theme from the first Spider-Man title for PlayStation, released in 2000. Fun fact — the first Spider-Man video game ever was released for Atari 2600 in 1982.
Michael Bublé did a jazzy cover of the Spider-Man theme for the second Raimi Spider-Man film, so enjoy some finger-snappin’ web-slingin’.
The Spectacular Spider-Man animated show aired on the Kids’ WB block of The CW from 2008 to 2009. It’s a bit newer than the other theme song remixes, but still provides an entertaining rendition.
This remix gets back to the classics with the 1960s theme song.
Three actors have played Spider-Man in the past 16 years, and this last video overlays clips of each of their performances and their movies’ soundtracks with the game’s trailer, showing how the Spider-Man titles have shifted between the years: Maguire is hopeful and heroic, Garfield shifts to a darker tone, and Holland brings the buoyant youthful energy that made Spider-Man popular as a teenage hero.
Spider-Man launches as a PS4 exclusive on Sept. 7.
