Destiny 2 developers just released new footage of the death of Cayde-6

We knew it was going to happen, but not like this

Destiny 2 developer Bungie was on hand Thursday at the Gamescom convention in Germany with a grim errand. Game director Steve Cotton and project lead Scott Taylor revealed, live on stage, the in-game cinematic of the death of Cayde-6. You can watch the entire video above.

[Warning: The video above and the description below contain story spoilers for Destiny 2: Forsaken.]

In the video, Cayde-6 is shown inside a rubble-strewn building, cornered by an overwhelming force of Fallen soldiers. In the close-quarters scrum that unfolds, Cayde does what he does best and brings down dozens of enemies with his hand cannon, the Ace of Spades.

But in the video’s final moments, Cayde exposes his ghost. A Fallen sniper, who already had him lined up for the kill shot, shifts his aim to the tiny creature. On impact, this vessel of the Traveler’s Light explodes, knocking down some of the remaining combatants. Finally, the largest among them steps in for the fatal blow.

Bungie has gone to great lengths to say, in plain English and to multiple outlets, that Cayde is good and truly dead. And yet there is still a modicum of hope after seeing the clip that somehow he survived. The video stops short of showing his lifeless form on the ground, cutting instead to a silhouette of the chamber he’s been knocked into.

We’ll know more when Destiny 2: Forsaken is released for PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One on Sept. 4.
