It’s a good day for fighting game fans: A new Samurai Shodown game is heading to PlayStation 4.
SNK released a teaser trailer, seen above, today ahead of next week’s Tokyo Game Show. There are brief glimpses of fighters going head-to-head in the trailer, but it also does a good job of showing off how the newest Samurai Shodown, which is called Samurai Spirits in Japan, title looks. The game is powered by Unreal Engine.
Samurai Shodown is one of the most revered fighting game franchises, especially with fighting game fans who were big into the genre in the 1990s. This is especially big news for fans: The last original, stand-alone Samurai Shodown title (not including an anthology title released in 2009 for Wii, PSP and PlayStation 2), was Samurai Shodown: Sen, which was released for the Xbox 360 in 2008.
There isn’t too much information about the newest title yet, but SNK expects to release it in 2019. Hopefully we’ll get more information at Tokyo Game Show next week, but barring that, expect to hear more about the game next year.
