Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Blackout mode has barely been in beta for a day, and we’re already unraveling a few of its mysteries. While there’s plenty to like about the marriage of Call of Duty and battle royale on the surface, it’s the stranger Call of Duty mechanics that make up Blackout mode’s best surprises — for instance, when a piece of Call of Duty’s popular Zombies mode makes its way into Blackout.
If you aren’t sure what I’m talking about, even though you’ve played the beta, don’t worry; it’s easy to miss. But, nestled into the standard battle royale mechanics are a few zombies that might surprise you. If you make it past. them, however, you can find a mystery box full of rewards. So, here’s everything you need to know to about Blackout mode’s mystery boxes.
What exactly do these mystery boxes do?
Mystery boxes are an important part of Call of Duty’s Zombies mode. In that mode, the boxes give you random loot for a low price. Not only is it the most efficient way to get strong weapons, but it’s also the only way to get some of the mode’s most interesting and silly weapons like the ray-gun.
In Blackout, it’s somewhat similar, but you should probably think of it more like a traditional battle royale air-drop. The mystery box could contains a few items for players to loot, including armor, perks and weapons.
How do I find the mystery boxes?
Mystery boxes seem to spawn in specific locations, but only a few spawn at once. You’ll know if one is around thanks to the claps of thunder and the giant beam of light shining into the sky.
What happens once I get to the box?
Once you head toward the light, you’ll find a wooden box with a question mark on it, there’s your mystery box. But be careful before you collect your loot, as zombies are wandering all around the area with the box. If you aren’t careful, they’ll catch you and kill you as easily as a player.
There is a bonus to fighting the zombies around the box, however, because they drop loot. Yup, along with shambling around the map to protect a wooden box, zombies also carry around weapons, grenades, ammo, perks and armor. The best part about this zombie loot is that it can also give you things like the ray gun or the Zweihander, two staple weapons from Call of Duty’s Zombies mode that have both found their way into Blackout.
The mystery box is one of the biggest secrets discovered in Blackout so far, and it’s also something that only Call of Duty could add to battle royale. But as people get more time with the game, and explore more areas of the massive map, there are sure to be a few more secrets discovered during the Blackout beta.
