Yoshi’s Crafted World buttons up spring 2019 launch

Yoshi makes his very artsy Nintendo Switch debut

Good-Feel/Nintendo

Yoshi is coming to Nintendo Switch in spring 2019 with Yoshi’s Crafted World. The full title of the long-gestating game — first revealed at E3 2017 — comes to us via a trailer shown during today’s Nintendo Direct presentation.

Yoshi’s Crafted World is the first platforming adventure to star Mario’s dinosaur bro and sometimes-steed since Yoshi’s Woolly World. It looks very similar to that game, which launched first on Wii U in fall 2015. (Thankfully for those who missed out on the console version, Nintendo ported the lovely, plush Woolly World to 3DS in 2017.)

Crafted World allows players to join up with a friend, which is a nice touch; and it also lets players walk backward, practically a sin for side-scrolling platformers. Other than that, Yoshi’s new adventure seems to be much akin to his previous one, except much, much glossier. That’s fine by us.

The Nintendo Switch exclusive was once scheduled for a 2018 launch. During this past E3 in June, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé told us that it wouldn’t make that window. Instead, Yoshi’s Crafted World will be one of the company’s marquee first-party titles for 2019.

September’s Nintendo Direct event is the first to detail a slew of games since E3’s half-hour presentation. While we’ve had at least one Super Smash Bros. stream in the months since, this evening’s half-hour show is the first time we’ve been treated to a variety of Nintendo games.

The next level of puzzles.
