They only work with the Nintendo Switch Online’s NES games

Nintendo announced that the company will be releasing special NES controllers for the Nintendo Switch.

These retro controllers are super cool and identical to the originals, but they unfortunately are only compatible with the Nintendo Switch Online’s NES games. That means no, you will not be able to play Breath of the Wild or other new games with these.

In order to use the NES controllers, Switch owners must be subscribed to the Nintendo Switch Online service, where they will have access to NES games as a perk. The service will cost $3.99 for one month, $7.99 for three months and $19.99 for 12 months. There will also be a family membership service available if you want to split the cost.

The controllers slide right into the console like regular Joy-Cons to charge, but it doesn’t look like they’ll be able to be used in the handheld mode.

The controllers will come in a set of two for $59.99 and will be available for pre-purchase on Sept. 18 via Nintendo’s website.
