The Dragon Prince debuted last week on Netflix with a host of compelling, diverse characters and rich lore, every scene seems to have been considered and packed with world-building; just in the opening alone, fans noticed a unique elvish outfits corresponding to each type of magic existing in the world.
“There are so many little details in [the opening] that are things we’re alluding to, stuff in the world that we’ve thought about and that we are hoping to have the opportunity to tell stories about and expand on,” head writer Aaron Ehasz said of the early shots.
Ehasz and his co-writer Justin Richmond said that there’s much to embed in The Dragon Prince because they’ve spent an unfathomable amount of time crafting the history of both the magical land of Xadia and the Human Kingdoms. And there’s plenty more to explore.
“We have a lot of deep ideas about this world,” said Ehasz. “I mean honestly we have a whole story built out of how Harrow’s great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother became the Queen of Katolis — we have a title for it. We’ve over-thought a lot of things.”
Though fans are still waiting for Netflix to announce a second season of The Dragon Prince, it looks like there’s going to be plenty of the world to showcase. It’s no secret that in addition to the show, Wonderstorm is working on a video game for The Dragon Prince universe. Richmond, who previously worked on the Uncharted games, said that The Dragon Prince game would very specifically not be “straight-up a narrative-based game.”
“It’s very different from that, but it does connect very deeply to the world and characters of The Dragon Prince and there’ll be things in the game that hugely expand upon the lore of our world,” Richmond told Polygon. “So it’s not a companion piece. It’s not a licensed game. It’s a fully fledged piece of The Dragon Prince world that you will get to see through a different lens.”
Even with the Netflix series and the game, both creators want to tell more stories about their world — stories that the audience wants to hear. What sorts of stories they will tell next is up to the audience.
“We want to share stories about this world that are compelling enough to capture an audience with imagination” said Ehasz. “We want to hear what people want from the world of Xadia and the world of The Dragon Prince and we’ll be listening [...] We definitely are creating this to be something that hopefully is worthy of people in different ways and we want to listen to them and build other parts of it.”
If the audience wants puppet shows, joked Ehasz, then they’d talk to the best puppet builders in the world next week.
While there’s a lot about The Dragon Prince’s lore that has already carefully crafted and a lot of plans set in motion, the team at Wonderstorm is also open to seeing where the story takes them.
“We’re keeping an open mind about these characters, we’re discovering things as we go,” said Ehasz. “We have an amazing writing team that is helping us build out the world. So we have lots of plans, but we also are open to a journey of discovery.”
The Dragon Prince is available to stream on Netflix.
