Before “Zendaya is Meechee” became this week’s viral meme, Gabriel Gundacker was best known for creating unofficial Wii Sports songs and a widely shared Ghostbusters Vine.
“Zendaya is Meechee” is a ballad about, well, Zendaya’s character in Smallfoot, an animated children’s movie about Yetis discovering humans. Gundacker’s song is dedicated to the entire cast of Smallfoot, but Zendaya is the real star. Zendaya, who many people will remember as MJ in Spider-Man: Homecoming (and from performing dances with Homecoming co-star Tom Holland on Instagram), even responded to Gundacker’s strange devotion to her Smallfoot character.
“Sang my name right and everything,” she tweeted.

Gundacker was one of Vine’s most successful creators, who transitioned his notorious six-second videos into a career as a musician and YouTuber. Although Gundacker found more success elsewhere — he’s a writer and voice actor for the Showtime channel — he hasn’t achieved the same level of online success other Vine stars, like Jake and Logan Paul, David Dobrik, Liza Koshy and Lele Pons to name a few, did.
But he never lost his following, and now, Gundacker has everyone’s attention again. The hilarious, 52-second song has nearly 100,000 likes on Twitter and just under 20,000 retweets.
Gundacker’s reignited viral fame is a good reason to revisit his best Vines.
There was also a series of long running jokes that Gundacker’s followers — or people who are really into Vine compilations on YouTube — will recognize. One of my personal favorites is his ongoing series dedicated to Hillary Clinton, who just always has to best Gundacker’s own personal victories.
He also released an entire album in September 2017 dedicated to creating themes for a series of “unofficial” Wii Sports games, including croquet and curling. Each song has a Vine-like intro that’s equally hilarious.
Gundacker is a man of many talents, and he’s quickly made the internet a better place. So thanks, Gabe, for all of your work — and letting us know what Smallfoot is.
Smallfoot will hit theaters on Sept. 28. The trailer is below.
