The first trailer for Dark Phoenix, the delayed sequel to 2016’s Apocalypse, is finally here, and it doesn’t shy away from action.
Debuting on The Late Late Show with James Corden, the spot aims through scope and action to compete with Marvel’s MCU proper, but whether it could eventually fold into the universe thanks to Disney and 21st Century Fox’s merger is unclear in this first look. That the movie’s even coming out seems like something of a miracle for fans of the series.
Sophie Turner’s (Game of Thrones) Jean Grey is the central focus as her powers grow stronger, posing a threat to the world and the galaxy. The familiar cast includes James McAvoy (Atomic Blonde) as Charles Xavier; Tye Sheridan (Ready Player One) as Cyclops; Alexandra Shipp (Love, Simon) as Storm; Michael Fassbender (Alien: Covenant) as Magneto; Jennifer Lawrence (Red Sparrow) as Mystique; Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) as Beast; Evan Peters (American Horror Story) as Quicksilver; Kodi Smit-McPhee (ParaNorman) as Nightcrawler; and Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) as Smith.
The official synopsis is below:
In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite -- not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
After some delays to account for reshoots, X-Men: Dark Phoenix is currently set to premiere on Feb. 14, 2019.
