Earlier this month, Entertainment Weekly debuted the first official photos from Marvel’s upcoming Captain Marvel, and one particular photo has already caught people’s attention: four Skrulls, members of an alien race who will act as the antagonists of the film, walking ashore an unknown beach. The first trailer for Captain Marvel sets the moment into motion (and later features Carol Danvers punching an old woman, disguised by shapeshifting powers). But the snapshot was ripe for meme-ing, and the internet was happy to comply.
In fairness, it’s fun to joke about the Skrulls. They look like a failed rock band — or a supporting cast of fish men who were supposed to appear in The Shape of Water but got scrapped on the cutting room floor during editing.
We’re not the only people who think so, either. The Skrulls are now a meme, and are even being subjected to PhotoShopping contests. Really, what’s the point of a major superhero movie reveal if you can’t revel in a few jokes.
Luckily, Captain Marvel doesn’t look anywhere near as bad as her alien counterparts. Her costume reveal is being celebrated by just about everyone — although people have argued that Captain Marvel could use a ponytail.
Here are some of the best memes we’ve come across. Captain Marvel will hit theaters on March 8, 2019.
