Stardock and the original creators of the Star Control series, Paul Reiche III and Frederick Ford, are at odds over two games — both of which claim to carry on the legacy of the decades-old spacefaring franchise. A lawsuit is currently being contested in federal court. The story began in 2013, when Stardock purchased some of the rights to the Star Control franchise in an Atari bankruptcy auction, and continued evolving through 2018, when Stardock released Star Control: Origins.
