Destiny 2: Black Armory’s season of content is almost finished, with the Last Word hand cannon coming to the game in a new questline tomorrow, Jan. 29. But the fan-favorite hand cannon won’t be the only hand cannon coming back as part of Destiny 2’s annual pass, as this trailer teases the return of Thorn, arguably Destiny’s most infamous weapon, in the Season of the Drifter.
The Last Word is a PvP-focused weapon designed to deal with enemies quickly in medium to close range. Unlike most hand cannons, Last Word is designed to be shot quickly from the hip — like a submachine gun — rather than aimed. The trailer confirms that this style of fast-action gunslinging is set to return with Last Word, with some fancy shots of the player shooting a grenade out of the air before taking down their enemy.
The Last Word has been a favorite of Destiny PvP players since the first game released, and it dominated the Crucible in the hands of skilled players. In Destiny 2, Last Word will become available through a lengthy questline which will likely involve quite a bit of Crucible play to earn — assuming the usual datamine crew is correct.
However, the most interesting part of this trailer has nothing to do with Last Word itself. Instead, Bungie teases that “every hero needs a villain” and shows several thorns being shot into the wall.
For those who don’t know, this is a clear tease of Thorn, another exotic hand cannon from Destiny. Thorn is infamous, and has earned Destiny fans’ love and ire equally. The gun fires thorns that stick in enemies and deal damage over time, making escaping a firefight with only a sliver of health almost impossible.
Bungie teases in the trailer that this “villain’s weapon” will be arriving in the Season of the Drifter. This language is interesting considering the seasonal roadmap Bungie released late last year. In the Season of the Drifter, there are two exotic quests listed: one that’s free for all players, and another that requires Joker’s Wild — next season’s equivalent to Black Armory. This trailer seems to suggest that, unlike Last Word, Thorn will be free for all players next season.
While Bungie’s tease is obvious, nothing has been confirmed by name yet. Players will need to wait until Joker’s Wild and the Season of the Drifter is released this March before getting their hands on Thorn.
