First Watchmen, Game of Thrones footage debuts during Golden Globes

HBO reveals how Damon Lindelof’s adaptation plays off the original

HBO took the occasion of tonight’s Golden Globe awards to debut the first footage from two of its most anticipated 2019 series: Watchmen and the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones.

The footage was delivered in a sizzle reel of what’s coming this year on the network, from True Detective to Veep’s final season and more. In Watchmen, from The Leftovers and Lost producer Damon Lindelof, we find a world a world full of masks — an interesting development for a show set in the modern day, close to four decades after the events of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen series. Even cops wear masks in the new series, it appears, and, of course, there’s a shot of someone in what seems to be a Rorschach-inspired black-on-white cowl.

And finally, Game of Thrones fans salivating over every taste of the upcoming final series got their first glimpse at a meeting of titans as Sansa welcomes Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow to the ancestral northern home of the Starks.

“Winterfell is yours, your grace,” declares Sansa Stark, the only line of dialogue in the Thrones footage.

Game of Thrones’ ninth season will premiere sometime in April of this year, and will conclude the epic series — though multiple spinoff series are in the works.
