The long-rumored Barbie live-action movie takes a step forward in production, with Academy Award-nominated actress Margot Robbie taking on the title role. In addition to playing the glamorous and iconic fashion doll, Robbie is also slated to co-produce the movie.

Previously, Mattel had partnered with Sony on a separate Barbie project, with Amy Schumer attached to the lead role, but scheduling issues forced Schumer to drop out. This new Barbie movie comes from Warner Bros. Pictures instead. It will also be the first film to come out of Mattel’s newly established Mattel Films branch.

While Barbie has been the subject of numerous animated movies and a few web series, there has never been a live-action version of the doll before. Throughout Barbie’s almost 60-year legacy, she has taken on many roles, from princess to veterinarian, from race-car driver to game developer.

“I’m so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide,” Robbie said of the project in a press release. “I can’t imagine better partners than Warner Bros and Mattel to bring this film to the big screen.”

There’s no release window for Barbie as of now. Robbie, meanwhile, is slated to start filming on the upcoming Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), where she will reprise the role of Harley Quinn.
