Anthony Mackie faces a desolate Earth in Netflix’s first Io trailer

The latest post-apocalyptic sci-fi from Netflix is pretty bleak

The first trailer for Netflix original science-fiction movie Io opens on a desolated and poisoned Earth. While most of humanity has evacuated to Jupiter’s moon, Io, one young scientist named Sam (Margaret Qualley, Death Note) remains on the planet, determined to find a way to survive and adapt on Earth.

Seemingly alone, Sam continues to send out radio transmissions, in the hopes that someone will hear. Survivor Micah (Marvel’s Anthony Mackie) finds Sam from her radio messages and joins her, though he brings the bad news that the rest of the world is pretty much in the same state of despair and abandonment. Micah wants to join the survivors on Io, and though Sam initially wishes to follow in her late father’s footsteps and find a way for humanity to return to Earth, she eventually joins Micah.

The two must make the hazardous journey to the last shuttle launch from Earth — and decide if leaving their home planet is something they can bring themselves to do.

Io is out on Netflix on Jan. 18.
