A new trailer for Arsène Lupin III’s upcoming movie sets up a high-stakes plot, involving clockwork contraptions, secret codes and, of course, plenty of adventure.
The long-running manga-turned-anime has already spawned eight theatrical animated films, two live-action movies, two musicals, multiple CDs, various video games — and that’s not mentioning the separate television series and home releases.
This new movie, however, marks the first time the characters have been rendered in computer animation. The movie’s previous teaser was basically a character reel, showing how the iconic 2D animated characters look in CG.
Lupin the Third: The First is directed by Takashi Yamazaki (Stand by Me Doraemon) and produced by Toho Animation. The film comes 40 years after the classic Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro, which was Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s theatrical debut.
Lupin the Third: The First will hit theaters in Japan on Dec. 6. No plans have been announced for an international release.
