Season 5 could have been a series finale. Steven Universe: The Movie could have tied up all the loose ends. But against the odds, Steven Universe will return for a final season. Announced at the 2019 New York Comic Con with a new opening sequence and title, Steven Universe Future will be a limited series that acts as an epilogue to everything we’ve seen so far.
Steven Universe Future takes place after the events of Steven Universe: The Movie (or two years after the events of the show’s first five seasons, if you’re doing the math). The new opening reveals the characters sporting their time jump looks, the whole cast of gems and humans, and a new song.
Well, technically, it’s a song from Steven Universe: The Movie, but retooled to be a little shorter for the brief opening clip.
After the season 5 finale, it was unclear whether or not Steven Universe would continue on. The movie introduced Spinel, an old friend of Pink Diamond who felt left behind and wronged by the former leader, and signaled that there could be other gems out there who have felt wronged by either Rose Quartz or the Diamonds. Indeed, the new opening sequence reveals some formidable (and slightly familiar?!) looking enemies.
The announcement of Steven Universe Future also came with a short tease of the series’ direction:
After saving the universe, Steven is still at it, tying up every loose end. But as he runs out of other people’s problems to solve, he’ll finally have to face his own.
Sugar did not announce a premiere date for the final season.
