There is no Marvel Comics without Stan Lee, and after this year’s New York Comic Con, there’s no Marvel toy collection without Stan Lee either.
On Thursday night, Hasbro revealed a new line of figures from the toy company’s Marvel Legends line-up, and true to his modern legacy, Lee made a surprise cameo. Hasbro based the six-inch figure’s look off his cameo appearance in The Avengers, where Lee is seen playing chess in the aftermath of the Battle of New York. The collectible comes with the chess board and a Captain America shield emblazoned with Lee’s signature.
Earlier this year, Marvel paid tribute to Lee through a series of specialty covers. Marvel Studios, who granted Lee cameo status in every one of the movies (some with meaningful implications for the MCU), ran a special opening logo treatment honoring the comics maven in front of Captain Marvel. The figure is Hasbro’s own way of saying thank you for giving them plenty of hero fodder to whip up into new toys each year.
Lee wasn’t the only icon getting a Legends treatment at the 2019 NYCC. This year’s line-up included new figures for Mr. Fantastic, Sue Storm, Human Torch, The Thing, Doctor Doom, She-Hulk, Deadpool, Sunspot, and Warpath. Each figure runs $19.99 and will be available in Spring 2020.
