Capcom really put a guy named Martin Sandwich in the new Resident Evil

Commence with the Jill jokes

Capcom

Capcom’s recently revealed Resident Evil 3 remake will include an asymmetrical multiplayer mode called Resident Evil Resistance, in which a team of four survivors must try to escape a deadly experiment overseen by an opposing player controlling a character known as the Mastermind.

Crucially, one of those survivors — Capcom has confirmed six of them so far — is named Martin Sandwich. Capcom revealed this important information on Twitter on Wednesday.

Of course, the obvious joke here is that Martin is somehow related to Jill Valentine, the butt of a terrible joke in the original Resident Evil. In case you missed that one, in that game, Barry Burton rescues his fellow STARS member Jill from being crushed to death by a trap in the game’s spooky mansion. “That was too close,” Barry says. “You were almost a Jill sandwich!”

It’s a classic, goofy-as-hell moment in a game infamous for its clumsy dialogue.

Capcom modified that line for the Resident Evil remake — “A second late, you would have fit nicely into a sandwich,” Barry says in that version of the game — but the company later poked fun at itself in Dead Rising, which had a restaurant named Jill’s Sandwiches.

We don’t know much about Mr. Sandwich, other than that he’s a “skilled engineer and mechanic, [and] can create traps to slow down or stun enemies,” but he certainly doesn’t look particularly stoked to have that name.

Martin will be joined by Becca, January, Samuel, Tyrone, and Valerie in Resident Evil Resistance, which will arrive alongside Capcom’s Resident Evil 3 remake on April 3, 2020. We played the Resistance mode back at Tokyo Game Show in September and found it to be a lot of fun — especially when playing as the sadistic Mastermind.
