Destiny 2’s Season of Dawn will let players ride Sparrows on Mercury

The longest two year wait in Destiny history

Destiny 2 season of dawn Bungie

Since Destiny 2’s Curse of Osiris expansion back in 2017, players have wanted Sparrows on Mercury (Destiny 2’s smallest location). In the teaser trailer for Destiny 2’s upcoming Season of Dawn, the studio unceremoniously revealed that Guardians could finally drive their hover bikes on Mercury.

When Curse of Osiris released in 2017, Bungie wouldn’t allow players to ride Sparrows on Mercury — likely because it only takes about 45 seconds to run from one side of the area to the other. But with the upcoming Season of Dawn set mostly on the hot planet, fans hoped things would change. In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in the trailer, you can clearly see Guardians driving new Sparrows through the familiar desert sands. Destiny community manager dmg04 confirmed the feature on Twitter.

Mercury isn’t a popular planet in Destiny 2, but there are still two Strike missions located there that players will sometimes get dropped into. For a lot of Destiny’s grindy activities, speed is the name of the game, and Mercury is currently the only planet that doesn’t let you use a sparrow. So, this seemingly small detail is being celebrated by fans.

Curse of Osiris is widely viewed as the worst expansion in Destiny franchise history. While Destiny 2’s improved significantly in the past two years, Mercury still serves as a reminder for when things were roughest for Destiny fans. In a small way, this gesture almost seems like a recognition of that frustration years later, especially now that Bungie has developed a better relationship with its community.

Bungie will fully reveal Season of Dawn on Dec. 4, with the new batch of content launching on Dec. 10.
