2019 hasn’t been the best in terms of Disney’s live-action remakes of its animated classics, but it looks as though 2020 might turn things around, thanks to Mulan.
The first look at the live-action Mulan made it clear that the new film, directed by Niki Caro, wouldn’t be a shot-for-shot remake of its predecessor, as does the latest trailer. Liu Yifei stars as Mulan, the legendary female warrior who took her aging father’s place in the army. The rest of the cast features Donnie Yen as mentor figure Commander Tung, Yoson An as fellow soldier (and love interest) Chen Honghui, Tzi Ma as Mulan’s father, and Jet Li as the emperor of China.
The new trailer offers a clearer look at some changes, notably revealing Gong Li as a “powerful witch” capable of transforming herself into a bird, and Jason Scott Lee as Bori Khan, who seems to serve as an analog for the animated film’s Shan Yu.
